It's really in There!

I will be starting a new weekly post entitled "It's really in There!" In it, I will post a verse from the Bible which may or may not be surprising or shocking to you. My pupose is two-fold: to glorify God by quoting His Word, and to inspire and convict you to take out the Bible and read it!

Here goes...

Proverbs 18:17
"The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him."

Now this week's verse is one to get you thinking. So, what are your thoughts???

Caution: Context is important!!! If I seem to be extracting meaning from a verse which is not it's original intent, please bring this to my attention. Thank you.

Note: All Scripture quoted is from the English Standard Version.

Well...

If I stand up and say something, and everyone agrees with me. It might feel as if it's right and I've totally said a great thing. However, if someone disagrees with me and has a better more accurate truth, and challenges what I've said and proves it wrong. Then I am wrong.

So at first, I thought I was right and everyone else thought I was right, until someone else came along to prove otherwise.

This verse outlines a very basic principle in argumentation, namely that any position sounds more plausible when it stands alone. Another way to say the same thing would be: A person can say something very ridiculous or unreasonable, but often that will not be discovered until someone brings it to light.

As for context, well, in Proverbs there isn't much context to go on--because it is a choppy set of proverbs (with themes but not necessarily a distinct flow).

Another thought.. This verse is a good indication of why many cults try to stop their members from being exposed to "outside sources"

Julianne- GREAT idea! Actually, I've come accross some pretty fascinating/hard texts that are worth pointing at and thinking about. I'm going to call it "The Bible says THAT?!?!"
